I'll never forget that most beautiful fall morning, I was in a continuing ed class, when the instructor said he was dismissing the class because a terrible tragedy was happening. He didn't want to discuss details. I had the feeling he had family in New York. He bussled out and the class was left in awe, wondering what had happened!
Are you really only 30 years old? Wow! You look beautiful and young, of course but you have the courage and wisdom of someone 130. I was an adult on 9/11/01 and the lesson of that day (at ground zero, where I thought I might perish) was that many people were not patriotic. Yes, New Yorkers were great and rallied, singing the anthem in bars and street corners. But, Laura, the media was awful right away. I saw its underbelly immediately. Roker and Jennings gathered high school students and on a TV show told them that “America is bad and we must understand and embrace Islam.” Sue Simmons (Popular TV news anchor) rolled her eyes sarcastically on TV whenever American flags waved. Unmistakable and shocking. I wondered “What on earth is going on?” and also wondered who she was signaling by doing that. Clinton berated America at a university the next day, I think. It was briefly shown on TV then down the memory hole it went. Thats when I woke up. I lost trust in media. Over time I would lose trust in government. Anti-Semitism became worse. My art school friends didn’t check to see if I survived although they knew I was right there. When I confronted them, I heard “America got what it deserved.” That was my first realization that they were not really capable of friendship or compassion because of their political beliefs. That day changed me. And made me who I am.
I am amazed you were only a child then and manage to have the vision you have today. You are very special. Bless you.
Thank you Laura. My now 50 yr old son worked for a large law firm located about 2 blocks from the White House. I was waiting in Lakeland FL for hours to hear from him. He finally called after waiting at a phone booth in a long line downtown DC. He and fellow attys walked for hours into Virginia to safety in one of their homes. .. He saw the Pentagon on fire from the Washington Monument. Told me again today he will vividly remember that day the rest of his life.
