We need to talk about Florida’s “Resign To Run” Law and how Governor Ron DeSantis is trying to abuse his authority as Governor of Florida to urge the Republican legislature to change the law so that he can keep his job as Governor, and also run against President Donald Trump in the GOP primary during the 2024 presidential election.

Some of you, depending on where you live, may have never heard about the “Resign to Run” law. “Resign to Run” is a Florida law that requires any state official who qualifies for federal public office to resign from the state office he or she presently holds before jumping in the ring if the terms, or any part thereof, run concurrently with each other.”
Florida Statutes, Chapter 99.012
Whereas, Florida Statutes Chapter 99.012 (4)(a), reads, “Any officer who qualifies for federal public office must resign from the office he or she presently holds if the terms, or any part thereof, run currently with each other.”
Ron DeSantis recently won re-election in the 2022 midterm election to serve a second, four year term. That means his second term as Governor is going to carry on until 2027, while the presidential election year is 2024. With the election taking place in November, that means the next President of the United States will be inaugurated in January of 2025.
This is problematic because, one, it's clear that Governor Ron DeSantis deceived Florida voters into thinking that he truly wanted to serve a second term as Governor. And two, how is the Governor supposed to carry out his duties as Governor of Florida if, by chance, he somehow becomes the GOP nominee and makes it to the White House? How can one run a full time, national Presidential primary campaign and also be a full time Governor?
The answer is simple, you can’t do both, because doing so would require you to neglect one or the other.
That is the dilemma that is created when elected officials run for higher officer, and that’s the reason why the “Resign to Run” law was created. It was created so that politicians cannot have their cake and eat it too, so that if you are an elected state official, you have to resign from the office that you currently hold in order to run for higher office. However, Ron DeSantis thinks that he is above the law, which is strange, given that he has presented himself as a “law and order” candidate.
When you think of Governor Ron DeSantis and the fact that he’s trying to pressure the Florida Republican legislature to change Florida law only to benefit himself and his political aspirations, the first thing that comes to my mind is self-serving political corruption. This is the type of thing that you would expect from Third World leaders, dictators, and authoritarian individuals who abuse the political system to further enrich themselves and carry out their dictatorships.
Well, that’s exactly what Ron DeSantis is trying to do. He’s acting like an absolute tyrant so that he can control the election system in the state of Florida. There’s a common phrase in politics: “As Florida goes, so goes the nation.” Ron DeSantis is thinking, “as governor of Florida, if I win the state of Florida, I'm going to be the next president of the United States.”
If the tables were turned and we were talking about Gavin Newsom, the communist Governor of California, trying to change a state election law so that he could keep his seat as Governor and also run for President at the same exact time, people would be up in arms with outrage. So, why make an excuse for DeSantis?
It just so happens that President Donald Trump himself is a Floridian, ever since he changed his official residence from New York City to Mar a Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. In opposition to Governor DeSantis’s abuse of power in his attempt to undermine and attack President Trump by urging the Republican state legislature to change “Resign to Run”, I recently decided to draft a recommended resolution demanding the Florida legislature keep the “Resign To Run” law on the books. I brought copies of my recommended Resolution to the Republican Party of Florida quarterly meeting. I presented my recommended resolution to Republican Executive Committees across the state, because they have the ability to pass their own resolutions encouraging policy priorities within the Florida legislature.
It is clear as day that Governor DeSantis wants the state legislature to change this law to allow him to run for President while also remaining in the governor’s mansion. This is sure to be one of the hot button issues in the current state legislative session.
Personally, I don't think Governor Ron DeSantis should have filed to run for re-election as Governor if he wanted to run for President immediately following his second inauguration. Many people all around the country, Trump supporters included, donated to Ron DeSantis’s re-election campaign, believing that he was intending to serve another four years as Governor of Florida, when in reality, he is now going to turn around and use those campaign funds to file against President Donald Trump in 2024.
Some people are saying this sounds conspiratorial since Ron DeSantis hasn't officially filed to run in the GOP Presidential primary yet. That’s because DeSantis needs the Republican controlled Florida legislature to change the “Resign to Run” law unless he wants to resign right now, because if he were to file for President today, as Florida law currently stands, he would literally have to resign his seat as Governor. But, if he waits until the legislative session ends in May, and the Florida legislature changes “Resign to Run” with the sole purpose of aiding DeSantis’s 2024 Presidential run against President Trump (as members of the legislature have already confirmed they plan on doing), then DeSantis gets to have his cake and eat it, too.
The worst kept secret in the state of Florida is the fact that Ron DeSantis is indeed running for President. He is going to challenge President Donald Trump, who he owes his entire political career to, for the 2024 GOP nomination. You can expect Ron DeSantis to file at the end of May when the Florida state legislative session ends.
And if it’s not at the end of May, then it will definitely be the beginning of June, because it couldn’t be any more obvious that Ron DeSantis is running for President. In other words, anybody who supports changing Florida’s “Resign to Run” law is in favor of Donald Trump not being the 2024 GOP nominee.
So, if you support President Donald Trump like I do, and you would like to see President Donald Trump win re-election again and become the President of the United States in 2024, then you need to contact the Florida legislature, especially the Republicans, and tell them to NOT support changing Florida’s “Resign to Run” law.
